Within this one Scripture are found two very powerful promises from God -
#1 Thou wilt light my candle.
#2 The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
The first promise deals with the restoration or recovery of something lost.
Why does the "candle" need to be lit again?
What happened to put it out in the first place?
Matthew 5:15 tells us - "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." The "candle" was meant to be lit and stay lit, but something came along to blow it out.
Before going further, it behooves us to look at the meaning of the "light" of the "candle." In this particular verse, it is figurative of prosperity, success, happiness, and holiness.
What would blow out the "light" of the "candle"?
Perhaps, a breeze or wind of some sort.
The "wind" - in the Bible - oftentimes symbolizes adversities, struggles, pressures, testings, tribulation, etc. Going along with the figurative meaning of the "light" in this verse, we see that the "wind" was some sort of financial adversity...act of failure... situation that caused a broken heart, wounds, depression, and discouragement...or an act of sin, disobedience, and compromise.
To reiterate, at one time there was prosperity, success, happiness, or holiness. Now there is financial loss, failure, heartache, or sin. One of these situations came along and caused the "light" of the "candle" to go out.
Nonetheless, you have a promise from God today which tells you that no matter what loss you have suffered...what may have caused your "light" to go out - so to speak - "Thou wilt light my candle." God and God alone - Who is the Great Restorer - will come and help you recover all that the enemy stole or that you forfeited through your sin.
Have you suffered financial loss?
God will restore prosperity unto you.
Have you failed - whether it be in your relationships, ministry, profession, management of affairs, etc.?
He will restore Biblical success to you in these areas.
Have you encountered a situation in your life that left you brokenhearted and devastated in your emotions?
He will restore the joy of your salvation and make you to rejoice from your sorrows.
Have you disobeyed Him or compromised His Holy Principles?
If you confess and forsake all sin, He will have mercy on you, forgive you, cleanse you, and receive you back into fellowship with Himself.
"For Thou wilt light my candle"
Once again, your "light" will shine brightly through your restoration to prosperity and peace...recovery from all troubles...revival and comfort from a sorrowful spirit ...and restoration to a Holy Walk with God.
The second promise in our opening verse says - "The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness."
After reading this portion of Scripture, you have to wonder - Why is the Christian in "darkness"?
Did not the Scriptures tell us in Ephesians 5:8 - "For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light"?
Also, 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 says - "But ye, brethren, are not in darkness...Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness."
Then if "we are not of the night, nor of darkness," why does Psalm 18:28 promise you that the Lord your God will "enlighten your darkness"? To what is it referring?
Since "darkness" in the Bible typifies sin, some would use this verse to justify sin in a believer's life. However, the Bible rules out any such justification. This is definitely not referring to sin.
"Darkness" - in this verse - refers to times of obscurity and ignorance, sorrow and misery.
There are times in the Christian life when you don't know which way to turn. Snares and traps from the enemy seem to encompass you about. You
can feel the breath of the enemy - so to speak - but you do not know what he is scheming or planning at the moment for your destruction. You are laboring for the Lord - oftentimes under a blanket of discouragement. You
have followed the leading of the Lord, and yet you find yourself right in the middle of a raging storm.
You cry out of the depths of your heart -
"What is going on?
Lord, what am I doing in this place?
Where do I go from here?
Which is the right way to go?
Why, if I am following You so closely, did I end up in this situation or circumstance?"
God's Word assures you of an answer - "...The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness."
God will shed light on your path. He will give you understanding...lead, guide, and make your way plain before you so that you may avoid all the snares and traps of the enemy...impart peace to your heart and dispel the confusion of the enemy.
You must always remember - Even while in the midst of "darkness," you - as a Christian - always have the victory because of Jesus - the "Light" - Who abides within you.
Psalm 112:4 says - "Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness..."
2 Samuel 22:29 says - "For Thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness."
Isaiah 42:16 says - "...I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight..."
The "darkness" can never overtake you unless you give place to the devil through sin. Even as a Christian, if you find yourself in a dark place - not knowing which way to go - the "light" that abides within you will come bursting forth.
The Lord is your Lamp. Psalm 139:12 says of Him - "The darkness and the light are both alike to Thee." He will turn your "darkness" into "light" before you. He will show you the way.
Be encouraged, O saint of God! The dark place that you find yourself in today can never overtake you as long as Jesus - "the Light of the World" (John 8:12) - abides in you and you in Him.
He will "enlighten your darkness." The "Light" will dawn for you. Be assured of it.
The songwriter said it in this way -
"God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me
He will be my Guide
Hold me closely to His side
With love and strength for each new day
He will make a way, He will make a way!"
The Scriptures abound with God's Glorious Promises to His children.
Psalm 18:28 says - "For Thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness."
He will restore all that the devil stole from you.
When the enemy surrounds you with "darkness," the Lamp of God's Word will burst forth from your being - giving perfect understanding, peace, and assurance.
Trust Jesus today.
His Promises are "yea, and in Him Amen" (2 Corinthians 1:20).
You can count on them for sure.
May God Bless His Word,
