"...it is the great duty of Christians, who have sat under the preaching of the gospel, to be well settled in the doctrine of faith, which they have heard and received...the best way to be settled, is to be well grounded..." (William Burkitt's Expository Notes)
"We can expect the happy end of our faith only when we continue in the faith, and are so far grounded and settled in it as not to be moved from it." (Matthew Henry)
True Christianity is characterized by two (2) metaphors - "grounded" and "settled" in the faith.
"Grounded" implies a fixed condition - like a tree planted by the river's side as opposed to the chaff before a fan. It suggests a sure foundation as a building that sits upon a rock.
"Settled" implies spiritual stability - having a steady and firm resolve. It suggests the strength of the building - being immoveable and established. It is the result of being "grounded."
"Grounded" deals with the foundation (substructure); "settled" deals with the building (superstructure).
Both are needed to keep you as a Christian from being seduced by false teachers!
