"The voice of the people is the voice of God." As we look upon our wicked world, we unanimously would have to respond to this statement, by saying - "Absurd!" "Nonsense!" "That is ridiculous!"
With that being the case, we then must honestly and forthrightly ask ourselves some pointed questions - If "the voice of the people" is not "the voice of God," then why do we - generally speaking - act as if it is? Why is it that we - as Christians - allow what the majority has to say to mold, shape, and influence our lives - whether directly or indirectly?
The majority - for the most part - has been opposed to God and His kingdom and in great favor of the things of Satan, the world, and the flesh.
The Scriptures confirm this fact.
Let's look at some examples of what "the voice of the people" had said and are saying even today.
1. We Are Not Able To Obey God
Numbers 13:30-31 says - "And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we."
In this instance, a tumult arose from the ten spies who said that it was impossible to go in and possess the Promised Land as the Lord God directed. There were too many difficulties along the way.
"The voice of the people" today is the same. When God gives an order, the majority is always present to discourage and point out how "it cannot be done." What He is asking is simply too hard for any man to accomplish.
2. We Have No King But Caesar
1 Samuel 8:5 says - "...make us a king to judge us like all the nations." John 19:15 says - "...The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar."
Even though God was their king - Who provided their needs and fought their battles - the people of God decided that an earthly King was what they needed. No matter what was said by the Prophet Samuel to the contrary to persuade them otherwise, they would not be moved. They wanted to be like everyone else - notwithstanding the price or inconvenience that would be on them and on their families.
Today is no different. Instead of allowing God to direct them, the cry of the people is for a certain ruler to lead the way. They would rather have a man than God rule over them. They want a man of their own choosing - one who will allow them to live their lives as they please.
3. We Will Not Have This Man To Reign Over Us
Psalm 2:1-3 says - "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us."
Here we read of a violent, malicious, and spiteful commotion, agitation, and opposition stirred up by the "heathen." They are assembled together for a common purpose and design. They are unanimously entertaining a uniform notion or idea. They are a community - ranging from the mighty - "kings" and "rulers" - to the mob.
What is their basic issue?
They are vehemently opposed to the advancement of Christ's kingdom in the earth - simply because it crosses their interests... restrains their beliefs...and seeks to quench their corrupt affections.
"The voice of the people" then and even today is alleging - "...Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us." In other words, let us cast off this government of God with its mention of dominion, authority, and restraint.
The "bands" were figurative of the yoke placed on the oxen in plowing. The "cords" were those which bound the oxen to the plow. Both were expressions pointing to the "yoke" of Christ which bound men to service for God.
4. Away With This Man
Luke 23:13-14,16, and 18 says - "And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people; and, behold, I, having examined Him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse Him...I will therefore chastise Him, and release Him...And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man..."
John 19:15 says - "But they cried out, Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him..."
"The voice of the people" then and now cries out - "Away with this Jesus." With great disdain and malice for the very One Who laid down His life for them, they daily cast Him aside from their lives.
5. Give Us Barabbas
Matthew 27:20 says - "But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus."
Instead of Jesus, "the voice of the people" cries out for a man of their own choosing - a man who is just as wicked as they are and is liable to meet their perverted demands.
Look around you today. What is "the voice of the people" saying?
Isn't it basically the same as mentioned above? Isn't it so that "the voice of the people" is still crying out for a government other than God's and a King other than the Lord Jesus to rule over them?
Then some fitting questions to ask yourself as a Christian are - How much are you affected by it all? Are you allowing the majority to dictate to you and rule over you? In your everyday life, do you adhere to what the crowds are declaring, or are you truly following the Lamb of God wherever He leads?
Exodus 23:2 warns us - "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil..."
Have you done so?
Have you been listening to what the world has to say rather than what God says? Have you been looking to another man to meet your needs rather than allowing God to be God in your home, family, church, business, etc.?
Just remember - there is a day coming when "the voice of the people" will be united in electing a man to rule over them. That man will be the Antichrist. He will be everything that they want in a leader.
Hence, it is time like never before to silence "the voice of the people" which - in most cases - is of Satan and sin and to fine tune your ears to only hear - "Thus saith the Lord" - what God has to say. What is the Lord Jesus speaking to you today?
Whatever it is, obey Him - no matter what "the people" say.
May God Bless His Word,
